ADPR Connection Bootcamp Recap

By Samantha (Sam) Genzale

ATHENS, GA. – On Oct. 8  in Studio 100, PRSSA members gathered to hear advice from a panel of industry professionals about how to be successful during ADPR Connection.

The panel consisted of career consultant, Whitney Denney; director of experiential programs, Samantha Meyer; and lecturer, Kim Landrum. Each of them offered their personal tips on how to prepare for upcoming job and internship searches.

When discussing helpful tips to prepare for ADPR Connection Samantha Meyer encouraged students to do their research and have a game plan for who they want to network with before they arrive. “You need to do a lot of pre-work to be successful. If you want to stand out, do your research,” Meyer recommended. Whitney Denney, also passionate about being prepared and standing out among your peers, suggested, “It’s all about the content. Do employer research before you enter the room.”

When going through the job and internship interview process, standing out among other candidates is crucial. When discussing how students can be remembered, Landrum put it best: “Be authentic. You’re the only person that is just like you and you have to go in knowing you’re enough. Tell them who you are, what you care about, and what makes you different from others.”

Olivia Muller, a 3rd-year public relations major, thought the meeting was resourceful in her quest for finding a summer internship. “As internship applications are opening, this panel was helpful, because it gave me tips on how to get started with the process and figure out which direction would be best for me,” Muller said.

Students were able to go to stations to receive specific help in preparation for ADPR Connection. There were stations for resume critiques, practicing elevator pitches, and improving LinkedIn profiles, moderated by members of the PRSSA executive board.

ADPR Connection will be held in Tate Grand Hall on Oct. 22. Over 30 employers will be in attendance to give students the opportunity to network with the advertising and public relations industry’s top professionals.

Our next meeting is on Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Studio 100 with communications professionals from Home Depot.
