Let the Athens Holiday Spirit Light Up Your Season

By: Becca Albright

The holiday season brings a warm feeling into the air and while students are stressed preparing for finals, it is important to take some time for yourself to enjoy the holiday spirit around you.

While many of UGA’s students travel home for the holidays, Athens is a second home to most. During the months of November and December, Athens decorates its streets with fun lights and the colors of the season. One specific attraction is the Chick-Fil-A on Atlanta Highway.

This Chick-Fil-A location is known for showing its Christmas spirit and having their restaurant literally dripping in lights. The lights drape from the building and make it feel as if you are entering into a winter wonderland. Chick-Fil-A, as a Christian-based company, is the perfect restaurant for this decoration choice because their customers know what their values are and how important the holiday season is. Many people take special trips to this Chick-Fil-A to be immersed in the holiday spirit and devour one of the famous peppermint milkshakes while they’re at it.

While the lights and wreaths are appreciated, the real joy is spending that quality time with your friends and family laughing, smiling and enjoying each other’s presence. The spirit of the holidays is one that brings happiness to most, but it is also a time to be thankful for the people you are surrounded by and be grateful for the life you have.

Holiday traditions are special to everyone. One of my favorite traditions is when my family and I drive around to look at Christmas lights before heading to midnight mass on Christmas Eve. Even as my siblings and I have gotten older and been separated by work and school, this tradition still stands because it is one of the only times when the whole family is together enjoying each other’s presence.

Next time you take a trip to this Chick-Fil-A, find yourself singing along to holiday songs on the radio, or are driving around looking at holiday lights, take a moment to step back and really appreciate how the holidays light up everything around you and truly bring everyone together.
